You have up to five possible blackjack player decisions on any given hand. The decisions you make on every hand directly influence the outcome, and with correct play the house edge sits below 0.5%. Other players may sit at the same table, but you are not competing against them. You don’t need a casino table or professional equipment — just a standard deck of cards, some chips or coins, and at least one other person. Blackjack is a card game where you compete against the dealer to get a hand value as close to 21 as possible without going over. Online blackjack generally offers more convenience, a wider game variety, exclusive bonuses, and self-paced gameplay.

The Deck and the Deal

Lewis has a keen understanding of what makes a casino portfolio great and is on a mission to help players find the best online casinos to suit their gaming tastes. This is a popular variant of blackjack, as the house edge is cut to 0.3% and card counting also becomes easier than with multiple decks of cards in play. Similar to American Blackjack, European Blackjack features a slightly higher house edge than the American version, at 0.62%, but it remains very popular at online casinos.

However, certain plays in the table need to be modified according to the specific combination of rules in force. Although pub stakes may vary, they are often much lower than in casinos with a minimum stake of 20 or 40 Krona and a maximum of 60 Krona (about US$7) for each hand. Some casinos will limit which card ranks can be split, for example no splitting of 10s or splits only allowed on 8s and Aces. Some casinos will take both bets while others will only take the initial bet and return the other. Otherwise the dealer reveals the cards at the end of the round when it is time to settle the bets. Surrender must be the player’s first and only action on the hand.

If the dealer’s face-up card is an ace or 10-value card, and there isn’t a no-peek rule, they’ll check their hole card to see if they have blackjack (an ace and a 10-value card). An alternative version of blackjack, popular in Europe, called European No Hole Card Blackjack or just European Blackjack, has no hole card at all. It’s worth mentioning that not all blackjack dealers deal their first card face-down.

If the dealer’s face-up card is an ace, this means the dealer could potentially get a blackjack. While dealers must hold when their hand reaches 17, they oftentimes must continue to draw more cards when they have a soft 17. Here’s a quick note about how hands with aces are treated. You can continue to draw additional cards to improve your hand, but you automatically lose independent casinos if your total goes above 21. Cards are valued by their pip value (2 through 10), while face cards (Jack, Queen, and King) are all valued at 10.

Some require the dealer to stand while others require additional cards to be taken until a total of hard 17 or 18+ is reached. The rules regarding Soft 17 (a total of 17 with an Ace counted as 11 such as A+6) vary from casino to casino. The dealer will then continue to take cards until they have a total of 17 or higher. It has become increasingly rare for casinos to offer the surrender option.

  • At the start of each hand, you are dealt two cards, with one of the dealer’s cards face up.

Table limits are typically higher than RNG and a chat function lets you interact with the dealer and other players. Like Perfect Pairs, the side bet resolves before the main hand plays out. Side bets are optional wagers placed at the start of a hand alongside your main bet. They will keep drawing cards until their hand reaches at least 17 or busts. Beyond the decisions you make, blackjack has a set of structural rules that govern every hand.

That reduces the RTP, so those games are not recommended. Blackjack rules are relatively straightforward to pick up. Live dealer blackjack brings the excitement of a real casino floor straight to your computer or mobile device. In addition, you can surrender you hand after the dealer checks for blackjack, and the dealer must stand on a soft 17. It follows the standard rules of classic blackjack but with one key difference.

Blackjack

The first known mention of the game was in a Spanish dictionary of 1611, where it was called ventiuno (twenty-one in Spanish – although the modern spelling is veintiuno). Blackjack’s appeal has led to its inclusion in numerous films, including iconic scenes in ‘Rain Man, ‘Casino’, and ‘Hangover’. There are a wide range of variants, all with their own special rules.

After your second card is revealed, you’ll be given the option to ‘Double.’ This will double your wager, and you’ll be assigned one more card. If you get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over, then you’ll win the round — and pick up any winnings if you’ve made a bet. This game is so common that you’re probably already aware of the fundamentals, but a little refresh never hurt anyone! To begin, let’s run through the basics of blackjack. Your goal is to beat the dealer by having a hand value closer to 21 without going over.
